Meet the Ohana Sports Medicine Team

Daniel Schaal

Daniel Schaal,

Daniel Schaal, graduated in 1998 from the University of New Mexico in Physiotherapy, began his career working at Taos Physical Therapy in Northern New Mexico, focused on outpatient rehabilitation and sports medicine. While at Taos PT he became certified in the Work Steps method of workman’s compensation injury prevention and management. He also developed the ACL and total joint replacement pre-operative programs and started helping in the pre-ski testing and strengthening program.

In 2001, Dan moved to Ele’ele, Kauai, HI to manage a newly opened clinic for HealthSouth. In 2005, Dan opened Ohana Sports Medicine in Port Allen, in 2011 purchased a lager building and moved to Kalaheo and in 2016 opened a second location in Kapaa. As the CEO and Director of Physiotherapy, Dan has taken Ohana Sports Medicine from a small operation to a leader in full service physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. He is a clinical instructor for the University of Colorado, Denver’s Doctor of Physiotherapy program and Southwest Baptist University’s Doctor of Physiotherapy program.

Prior to becoming a Physiotherapist, Dan earned a Bachelors of Science in Physical Education from the University of New Mexico. He coached Gymnastics for 12 years and worked as Physical Thearpy Technician at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. Dan was raised in Ft. Collins, Colorado, where he lived until 1985.

Michelle Pacilio

Michelle is originally from California where she received her BA in Anthropology from UCLA in 1993. Following her undergraduate studies, Michelle became a successful personal trainer in Los Angeles, working with some of Hollywood’s top celebrities as well as becoming fitness choreographer for the hit film “The Nutty Professor.”

  Michelle’s passion for health and fitness propelled her to pursue a career in Physical Therapy, receiving her Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Chapman University in 2002. Since then, she has worked in a variety of clinical settings including neuro rehab, home health, inpatient, and most extensively in outpatient orthopedics. For the last 9 years, Michelle has focused her energy through rigorous continuing education to become Kauai’s most experienced physical therapist treating Pelvic Floor Dysfunction for both men and women, with expertise in the treatment of incontinence, pelvic pain, colorectal issues, and pelvic girdle dysfunction.

  She has a patient-centered approach to treatment, utilizing manual skills, postural retraining, patient education regarding their health and fitness, and individualized exercise programs to promote independence and foster self-reliance. Focus of treatment involves assessing the “whole person”, rather than just the parts, to optimize mobility and function.

  A resident of the beautiful island of Kauai since 2003, Michelle resides in Kalaheo with her physical therapist husband, Gregg Pacilio, and their two children, Jai and Jade. In her free time she enjoys yoga, playing roller derby, and spending quality time with her family.

Jeff Gatling

Jeff grew up in Tennessee, north of Nashville, then moved to northern California in 2000 for undergraduate school at Pacific Union College, with a BS in marine biology and pre-physical therapy major. Jeff then moved to southern California and received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2006 from Loma Linda University. Since receiving his DPT, Jeff has worked in multiple settings, gaining a wide variety of experience, such as, outpatient sports medicine, home health care, acute rehab, geriatrics, pediatrics, and hospital inpatient care. Jeff did his doctoral research on shoulder mechanics and was privileged to do his studies with pitchers on the LA Dodgers during training camp in Vero Beach, Florida. Jeff has also been taking the Mulligan concept courses for manual therapy.

Jeff currently lives on the east side of Kauai in Kapaa, where is is the administrator for the Kapaa office. He enjoys the great outdoors that Kauai has to offer, participating in hiking with his dog, kayaking, going to the beach, camping, and surfing daily. He is also a regular participant with volunteering for K.O.R.E. in Hanalei, assisting handicapped persons being able to get into the ocean and surfing.

Jesse Spadino

Jesse Spadino graduated with his BS degree from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA where he also competed in freestyle snowboarding. He continued this passion for knowledge and boarding when he moved to Regis University in Denver, Colorado to begin his studies in physical therapy where he graduated with his DPT in 2018. Originally from Pennsylvania, he has recently moved to Kaua'i to begin practicing physical therapy here at Ohana Sports Medicine.

Jesse has focused his practical experience on general outpatient and sports rehab where enjoys helping patients restore functionality and return to "game ready" status. He also has experience with orthopedic and acute rehab within the hospital setting as well as providing therapy within the skilled nursing facility setting giving him a well-rounded background in rehabilitation. He is excited about providing services that utilize his training in vestibular therapy as well as advanced mobilization and manipulation.

Jesse currently lives in Kalaheo where he enjoys being active surfing, free diving and hiking. He is excited to be here at OSM to help get you moving and back on your feet doing the things that are important to you.

Brittany Washko

Brittany Washko,

Brittany grew up in the Chicago land area, though graduated with her BS degree from University of Dayton, in Dayton, OH. Afterwards she returned back home where she earned her DPT degree at University of Illinois at Chicago in 2018. Brittany then moved out west to southern Oregon where she completed her Orthopaedic PT Residency program at Riverside Physical Therapy from 2018-2019. During this program she focused on gaining more mentoring, manual skills, using evidenced based practice for patient treatment, and preparing to become an Orthopaedic Certified Specialist in the future. She recently moved to Kauai to continue her career here at OSM.

Brittany currently lives in Lihue and enjoys hiking, playing volleyball at the beach, and finding new healthy recipes to cook. She is excited to join the OSM team and help patients achieve their rehab goals and get back to activities they enjoy.

Laura Metzker

Laura Metzker,
PT, DPT

Laura Metzker, Hawaii-born and raised, is elated to be back home working with the best physical therapy team on Kauai. Laura earned her BS in Athletic Training at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and became a certified athletic trainer. Inspired by her strong belief in the ability to heal our bodies thru movement, she continued her education at Touro University Nevada graduating with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2012.

Laura has worked primarily in the outpatient setting where she enjoys educating her patients about their own healing power. She was privileged to be mentored by a certified Functional Manual Therapist through the Institute of Physical Art that gave her the unique skill of treating with a hands-on approach using Functional Manual Therapy®.

Laura and her husband Luke are the fortunate parents of two boys, Reef and Summit and revel in experiencing life together thru their sons' eyes.

Karin Wolosz

Karin earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Seton Hall University in 2011. She has spent her career working in the Outpatient Physical Therapy setting, both as a Therapist and Director. She enjoys that the Outpatient setting allows the ability to treat patients throughout the life span and through various stages of their recovery. There is no greater reward than to see patients achieve their rehab goals, and she is happy to be a part of the process.

When not working, Karin enjoys spending time with her family, going to the beach, and running. 

Beata Triplett

With over two decades of experience in Outpatient Physical Therapy as a clinician and administrator, Beata uses a variety of modalities to focus on the functional empowerment of each individual. Above all, Beata values the partnerships formed with her patients as they work together in achieving their personal goals.

Marc Esposito

Prior to coming to OSM Marc worked for 13 years at Turquoise Trail and Therapy Solutions in Santa Fe New Mexico. With much of his experience gained in a Physical Therapy Outpatient setting, Marc has also worked and interned in other settings as well, including Home Health, Skilled Nursing facility, Neuro rehab with aquatic therapy.

In 2001 he became a licensed Massage Therapist and in 2006 getting certified as a Neuromuscular Therapist, leading him to getting involved with professional endurance athletes, mixing well with his own long distance running background. 

After receiving his Associates as a Physical Therapist Assistant he then moved to Kauai and has enjoyed all it has to offer, both in the community and all outdoor activities. Marc is very excited to be one of the newest members of the Ohana Sports Medicine team.

Katie Kershner

Katie grew up in the heart of midwest Kansas and attended Kansas State University to receive her Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology in 2013. In 2015, she graduated from Washburn University as a certified Physical Therapist Assistant. With clinical experience in public schools, outpatient settings, and skilled nursing facilities, Katie has worked with multiple ages and populations. Katie has primarily worked in the settings of outpatient and skilled nursing facility and has gained experience in working with women's health, orthopedics, neuro, and geriatrics. In her spare time, Katie enjoys spending time with her husband and son, exploring what Kauai has to offer with hiking and beach time. She also enjoys baking, music, and being active in any way she can.

Shan Seto

Shan is the Front Office Manager officially, however, unofficially, she is the heart and soul of the operation. Often the first person with whom a patient has contact, Shan’s easy local style puts people at ease. Shan's been with Ohana Sports Medicine since 2005, and is really more a member of the family than an employee. Thanks Shan for all you do!

Deb Gallegos

Deb Gallegos,

Deb was born and raised in Colorado, but has lived in Arkansas, New Jersey, Nevada, Oklahoma and now Hawaii just to mention a few places. She has been happily married to her husband Rick for 14 years. The two of them visited Kauai in 2016 for their 10th Wedding Anniversary and neither wanted to leave. They spent two years planning their move to Kauai and on October 9, 2018 it became a reality. They are the parents of an 8 year old B&W Shih-Tzu named Gizmo, who they have had since he was 8 weeks old. Snorkeling is her most favorite thing to do here on the island.
